We will first cover some basics about TV, you should be knowing and after we will check some detailed information about how each technology operates.

Let’s check some quick information on TV Networks:

  • How Satellite TV Works: TV Services provided by satellite TV services providers like DirecTV, Dish TV, Tata Sky, etc. and it’s delivered through radio waves.
  • How Cable TV Works: TV services provided by cable TV services providers like Comcast, Time Warner Cable, etc. and gets delivered coaxial cable connection.
  • How IPTV Works: TV services catered through Internet through privately-managed network.
  • How OTT Streaming Works: Television services catered by third-party providers like Netflix and YouTube and delivered through open internet.

We can divide the above 4 categories into 2 sections:

  1. Broadcast Networks – It includes Satellite TV and Cable TV
  2. Internet Networks – It includes IPTV and OTT Streaming Services.

As per the name, broadcast networks works by broadcasting signals from a central location to satellite and then catering it to customer’s TVs through antenna and set top box. Here for cable, the signals are delivered through coaxial cable network and for satellite TV, radio waves are delivered through the satellite dishes installed on top of your house.
The major difference between cable and satellite TV is that cable is catered through wired connection and satellite TV is provided through satellite dish on top if your house.

Different from cable and satellite networks, Internet Networks provides contents through internet.
Getting delivered through internet, OTT and IPTV have difference in delivery process. OTT Streaming can be done on unmanaged network using a simple web browser or application like simply we stream Netflix anywhere anytime. While in case of IPTV, a private, dedicated network is used to deliver consistently quality services.
Cable and Satellite TVs deliver real time content while IPTV and OTT services first store content on their servers and then allow it’s users to stream the content over the internet anytime they want. IPTV can be called multitasking of content within the managed network by its operator.
Though OTT services have started being accepted by customers, it still not that common as an alternate to cable or satellite TV services.
Today the most used technology is cable TV and Satellite TV compared to OTT or IPTV technology; however, experts say that the future is of IPTV services as they can deliver better quality and can deliver more TV channels in Full HD or Quad HD (4k quality).
Today when satellite TV Providers like Dish TV, DirecTV and Tata Sky can provide full HD or 4k TV channels, so why do we need IPTVs?
IPTVs bring more flexibility are are more cost effective compared to satellite TVs where the traditional satellite dish is required to be installed on top of the house or in balcony. Satellite TVs also need a clear view of sky to get proper signals on the dish. Where IPTVs just need internet to cater services.

When we compare difference between Satellite TV and IPTV, we can see the below advantages an IPTV service will provide:

  1. Basic IPTV subscription gives you comparatively a lot more TV channels than the satellite TV services providers can give.
  2. IPTV Services providers do provide package deals on popular TV channels which can be sweeter than the packages given by Satellite TV Services provider.
  3. With IPTV Services, you do not have to face the hassle of fine tuning the signal for picture stability or voice clarity and no dish is required to be installed on top of the roof or balcony.
  4. IPTV can be bundled with Internet and IP phone, which can save a lot of money each month.
Satellite TV signals gets affected in bad or cloudy weather and this problem does not apply with IPTV Services as they are catered on internet.
  5. IPTV have a great future for sure and it can give even better picture quality once future TV panels becomes more advanced with 8k and 16k resolutions. Due to its high quality and affordable prices, IPTV is going to win the race unless something new is invented. Science is amazing and who knows something new comes out when!
